SaaS - 'Software-As-A-Service'

PowerAID is an end-to-end service for lighting operations with a planned or already implemented Smart Lighting System with individually connected luminaires. With PowerAID, modern Smart Lighting systems can now be augmented to also execute intelligent and automated determination of ideal streetlight dimming levels based on real-time traffic volume data/incidents/conditions -in short what is also referred to as Intelligent Dimming.

The idea of applying Intelligent Dimming to lower the streetlight illumination when there is less traffic on the roads, has been an obvious but elusive dream of many lighting operations for the past decades. With the global increase in electricity prices in recent years and the decline of in costs of edge processing and AI/IoT technology, this dream has finally become reality with PowerAID.

Furthermore, by providing the PowerAID solution as a full cap-ex free service, lighting managers will not have to deal with technology, data management, connectivity, privacy or commercial uncertainties. PowerAID is fully proven and ready to deploy for all your main roads and highways, with a predictable and self-financed outcome.

PowerAID Highlights

Automated Dimming According to Lighting Classes

PowerAID is an end-to-end service that include all necessary hardware (Traffic Sensors), platform (Cloud App) and services (Planning, Connectivity and Operation/Monitoring) to enable lighting operators of streetlight infrastructure to apply automatic dimming of streetlights based on variations in traffic volume according to EN13201/ UNI11248/ standards for streetlight illumination.

02

Automatic Traffic Reference Point Setting

The setting of dimming schemes for each road section/streetlight group is fast and intuitive. The system offers several options for defining traffic volume reference points used for determination of the relative traffic changes , either based on predefined free flow capacity, as per what was originally used to define the specific lighting class – or the reference traffic volume applied, can be determined automatically by continuously using  the highest historical peak of traffic volume for the chosen time interval aggregation (1,5,10, 15 min).

Select Traffic Objects and Directions for Dimming Triggers

For specialized dimming scheme requirements, each individual PowerAID set up can be filtered in terms of what traffic objects, and their direction should be included in the traffic volume count applied to the scheme. This enables lighting managers to create variable dimming based on bicycle/pedestrian traffic only, or perhaps a dimming scheme based only on variance in the volumes of heavy vehicle traffic only.

04

Extensive Safety Override Features

In order to provide safety against unsafe/unwanted dimming levels during various situations and scenarios, the system enables a range of override actions. An override is when an ongoing dimmed down level is terminated, and light is brought back up to a lighting class above or to 100%. Apart from the required standard safety overrides of UNI11248 (Loss of Data Override and Fast Up Override), the PowerAiD algorithm is already prepared for potential future overrides such a Weather Override, Emergency Vehicle Override and Congestion Overrides. These additional overrides are currently available to be triggered via external systems and functions via the API calls of Felicity Connect.

Combined Streetlight Dimming and Traffic Visualization, Documentation and Reports

To fully understand and document the achieved savings and operational results for the implemented PowerAID schemes, the system offers various graphs and reports to fully visualize the interaction between the variations of traffic volumes with the executed variations in lighting levels.

With additional manual inputs like KWh price and CO2 factor, the PowerAID Savings Estimate Report, will calculate and compare the Power saving, CO2 reduction and  the derived power, money and CO2 savings results based on the burning hours for the specific location.
